*Toddler and Children's House Floating Assistant Teacher / After-School Program Staff*
* Working primarily with students ages 12 months through Kindergarten.
* 10:00 am - 5:30 pm, M-F, during the school year, plus opportunities for optional summer employment *GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB* The floating assistant teacher will help the teachers provide an organized, safe, and nurturing environment for the children that encourages their social, emotional, physical and intellectual development.
The floating assistant teacher is responsible for contributing to the preparation and maintenance of their assigned environments in which the Montessori approach to education is implemented and incorporates the Academy’s mission, culture, goals, values, philosophies, policies and practices.
The floating assistant teacher will work with the Head Teachers for their assigned level(s) and other Academy teachers and faculty as a team to assist in the implementation of appropriate instruction and the supervision and care of students.
The floating assistant teacher will serve as a substitute assistant teacher, as needed and assigned.
The floating assistant teacher will have opportunities to grow professionally through decision making and working collaboratively to maintain positive relationships with families, children and co-workers.
The floating assistant teacher will ensure the safety and supervision of children at all times.
*SPECIFIC DUTIES OF THE JOB* *School Day Responsibilities:* Interactions between Teacher and Children * Interact frequently, affectionately, and respectfully, in a calm and courteous manner with children.
Communicate directly with each child at the child’s level.
* Respect and observe the children’s interest.
Intervene when needed to maintain safety.
* Engage and communicate constructively with individual children during activities and routines.
Take every opportunity to positively extend children’s thinking, learning and behaviors.
* Encourage and model social behavior and expectations, which are developmentally appropriate and align with Montessori philosophy.
* Practice positive discipline techniques in guiding children’s behavior according to Montessori Academy procedures and policies as outlined in the Montessori Academy mission, belief statements and Community Handbook.
*Curriculum* * Foster an environment which responds to children’s individual developmental levels, physical and emotional needs, and current interests.
* Support individuality, independence, interdependence, and the ability to make choices.
* Implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum, which reflects the Montessori approach to education and the Montessori Academy of Chambersburg’s written curriculum, which will include observations and assessments of individual children.
* Encourage creative expression.
* Demonstrate respect for diversity by providing diverse, anti-bias, non-sexist language, images, and experiences.
* Refer to daily and weekly schedules and emergency routine procedures at the entryway of each classroom.
* Follow each assigned class’s daily and weekly schedule which provides a balance of activities: quiet/active, indoor/outdoor, fine/gross motor, etc.
* Follow the community schedule to maintain flow and consistency between classes.
*Physical Environment, Health and Safety* * Maintain and follow all safety and health rules and procedures, including diapering.
* Supervise children at all times (indoor, outdoor, field trips, etc.
) Demonstrate awareness of the entire group while working with a small group or individuals.
* Maintain accurate attendance records.
* Complete appropriate paperwork.
* Keep the environment and equipment safe, clean and attractive.
Encourage respect for classroom materials.
Notify Administrative Assistant in advance when supplies are needed.
Classroom supplies are to be requested in writing to the Director of Education.
* Confer with Head Teacher (if needed) to: * Share observations.
* Exchange ideas about alternate ways to cope with challenging behaviors.
*After-School Program (ExCEL) Responsibilities:* * Prepare for assigned after-school duties before the program starts: * Communicate with the Administrative Assistant to confirm expected attendance and potential drop-in student schedules.
* Prepare after-school snack for assigned students.
* Arrive promptly in the assigned classroom to take responsibility for scheduled after-school students.
* Maintain responsibility for the programming and students in the assigned after school program * Follow posted schedules and Child Care Regulations, including diapering.
* Maintain general Academy program expectations, as specified above, throughout the afterschool program as well.
* Ensure that children enjoy opportunities to be engaged with a range of developmentally appropriate activities.
* Communicate with each child’s parent/guardian about needs to replenish their child’s personal supplies, such as diapers, wipes, clean clothing, snacks for special dietary needs, etc.
* Ensure that children are picked up only by their approved adults.
* Monitor camera of front entrance and confirm identity of all individuals before granting access to the building for pick-up.
* Check photo identification of unknown adults and match information to the approved pick up list.
* Communicate with approved adults about the child’s time in the after-school program and accurately pass along materials and communication provided by the child’s regular classroom teacher.
Refer any questions about the child’s regular school day to their regular classroom teacher.
* Ensure that children are properly signed out of the program.
*On-Going Duties:* * Help maintain community storage space, community learning areas, and the kitchen.
*Periodic Duties:* * Participate in after school day classroom/community activities/events each year (Curriculum Nights; Special Friend Nights; Spring Show; Back to School Night; etc.
) * Attend at all staff meetings and in-services.
*Professionalism and Teamwork:* * Maintain confidentiality about information concerning other staff members, children or families.
* Demonstrate knowledge of ages and stages of development.
* Support Academy’s mission, philosophies, values, goals and policies to families, co-workers and the community.
* Report to work on time, maintain consistent attendance and communicate leave requests at least two weeks in advance.
Leave requests are subject to approval.
